01 May An Exquisite Elegance
There’s a certain stillness I’ve come to appreciate—when someone walks into a room and you can feel they’re present, clear, and not in a rush to prove anything.
It’s a kind of quiet power. A calm strength.
Best selling author Joe Navarro calls it being exceptional.
I call it an exquisite elegance.
Before I met Joe at the Entrepreneurs’ Organization Global Leadership Conference, I was already a longtime fan.
His book What Every Body is Saying taught me that how we hold ourselves, where we place our feet, the way we listen—these often say more than our actual words.
His more recent book, Be Exceptional, brings those same principles into leadership.
After decades in the FBI and thousands of interviews, Joe found that the people who left a mark had five traits in common. They weren’t loud. They weren’t flashy. They had clarity. They had presence.
Here’s how you can use those five traits to speak with purpose and lead with care:
- Self-Mastery
Joe starts here, and for good reason. When you manage yourself—your thoughts, energy, and actions—you earn trust without having to say much. Composure is one of the clearest signals of a steady leader.
Try asking: How do I respond when things don’t go as planned?
- Observation
Exceptional communicators don’t just listen with their ears—they notice with their eyes. Joe teaches that people often say more with their bodies than with their words. As an entrepreneur, paying attention can help you respond instead of react.
Try asking: What am I noticing that others may be missing?
- Communication
Joe reminds us that everything we do communicates—our silence, our tone, even where we look. People don’t just hear your words; they read your presence. The way you carry yourself can make someone feel heard, seen, and respected—or not.
Try asking: Am I choosing clarity over volume?
- Action
It’s easy to make promises. It’s harder to follow through. Joe saw firsthand how people are drawn to those who don’t just speak well—but act in line with what they say. Your consistency is your message.
Try asking: Am I doing what I said I would do?
- Psychological Comfort
This one stayed with me. Joe calls it the “secret ingredient” of exceptional people—the ability to make others feel safe. It’s not something you say. It’s something you offer through your energy, your steadiness, your presence.
Try asking: Do people feel calm after speaking with me?
You don’t have to speak more to lead well. You just need to speak with more care.
If you’re ready to bring more ease and intention to how you lead and communicate—whether in your team, your business, or your life—I’d be honored to support you through coaching.
