4 Habits That Will Change How You
Lead, Sell, and Connect
by Kalika Yap
I’m so excited!
This April, I’ll be at an Entrepreneurs’ Organization event where I get to see New York Times Bestselling author: Charles Duhigg, the author of Supercommunicators: How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection, speak live!
I read this book a few years ago and it genuinely changed how I lead, listen, and connect. Getting to experience him in person is the kind of moment I truly treasure as an entrepreneur and lifelong learner.
I wanted to share the ideas that moved me most. If they can shift something for you the way they shifted something for me, this newsletter will have been worth it!
Something in this book quietly changed the way I show up in every room I walk into, from client meetings to conversations with my husband & daughters.
I have spent 27 years building businesses, coaching entrepreneurs, and studying what separates the leaders who truly connect from those who simply communicate. And this book sits at the very top of that body of work: Supercommunicators by Charles Duhigg.
The central idea is this: connection is not a gift you are born with. It is a set of learnable habits. As entrepreneurs, the quality of our connections directly shapes our results, from our sales to our teams to our partnerships and our leadership.
Today I want to walk you through the four core habits of supercommunicators and give you a practical, step-by-step guide to begin weaving them into your daily life starting right now.
Habit 1: Ask More (and Better) Questions
Most of us were never taught to ask questions well. We ask out of politeness, or to gather information, or to move a conversation forward. But supercommunicators ask questions with a different purpose entirely. They ask to open a door.
Deep questions invite the other person to go somewhere they have not been in a while. Questions like:
- What has been the most rewarding part of this work for you?
- What would you do if you were not afraid?
- What does success truly look like for you, beyond the numbers?
These questions create a different kind of conversation. They signal that you are interested in the person, not just the transaction. And in business, that is everything.
For you: Before your next client call, write down one deep question you genuinely want to ask. Notice what happens when you do.
Habit 2: Listen to Understand, Not to Respond
Here is a truth that humbled me: most of us listen to reload. While someone is talking, we are already crafting our reply, our solution, our story. We are physically present but mentally somewhere else.
Supercommunicators practice a different kind of listening. They listen to truly understand the emotion underneath the words, the need that has not been named yet, the thing the person is circling around but has not said directly.
Duhigg writes about a technique called looping, where you listen, reflect back what you heard, and ask if you got it right. It sounds simple. It is profoundly powerful. It makes people feel seen in a way that most of us rarely experience.
For you: In your next conversation, try this. After someone shares something, say: “What I am hearing is… Is that right?” Watch the energy in the room shift.
Habit 3: Pay Attention to HOW Something Is Said
Words are only part of the message. Supercommunicators pay close attention to tone, pace, body language, and the emotional energy beneath the words. They ask themselves: What conversation is actually happening right now?
Duhigg identifies three types of conversations happening in every interaction:
- Practical: What are we solving?
- Emotional: How are we feeling about this?
- Social: Who are we to each other?
Connection breaks down when people are in different conversations without realizing it. Your client might need emotional validation while you are already in problem-solving mode. Your team member might need to feel seen before they can hear your feedback.
The skill is not just noticing. It is adapting. Matching the type of conversation the other person is actually in.
For you: Before your next difficult conversation, ask yourself: Is this a practical moment, an emotional moment, or a social moment? Lead from there.
Habit 4: Be Willing to Be Changed by the Conversation
This one is the most vulnerable, and the most powerful. Supercommunicators enter conversations not just to convey their point of view but with genuine openness to being moved by what they hear.
As entrepreneurs, we are trained to be decisive, confident, visionary. And those are beautiful qualities. But the most magnetic leaders I know are also deeply receptive. They walk into a room willing to learn something that changes them.
This openness creates psychological safety for everyone around you. Your team will share harder truths. Your clients will be more honest about what they need. Your partnerships will go deeper.
For you: After your next important conversation, reflect: Did something shift in me? What did I learn that I did not know before?
Your Step-by-Step Guide: Becoming a Supercommunicator
Here is how to put these four habits into action, one day at a time.
Step 1: Set Your Intention Before Every Conversation
Before a meeting, call, or even a dinner conversation, take 60 seconds to ask yourself:
- Who is this person and what might they need from this conversation?
- Am I going in with curiosity or with an agenda?
- What is my one deep question for this exchange?
Step 2: Practice the Looping Technique Daily
Choose one conversation per day to practice looping:
- Listen without interrupting.
- Reflect back: “What I am hearing is…”
- Confirm: “Did I get that right?”
- Let them correct or deepen what they shared.
Do this once a day for 21 days and watch your relationships grow stronger.
Step 3: Identify the Conversation Type
Make it a daily practice to pause mid-conversation and ask yourself:
- Is this person in a practical, emotional, or social conversation right now?
- Am I matching them, or creating friction by being in a different mode?
When in doubt, ask directly: “Would it be more helpful if I just listened right now, or do you want to brainstorm solutions together?”
Step 4: Create a Weekly Reflection Ritual
At the end of each week, spend 10 minutes journaling on these questions:
- What was my most valuable conversation this week, and why?
- Where did I listen to respond instead of to understand?
- What did I learn that surprised me or changed my perspective?
- Where did I ask a deep question, and what happened?
Step 5: Audit Your Communication in Business
Look at your client onboarding, sales conversations, team check-ins, and email templates. Ask:
- Are we asking questions or making statements?
- Are we creating space for emotional truth, or only practical logistics?
- Do our clients and team feel genuinely heard?
Your communication IS your brand. Upgrade it, and everything rises with it.
