Calling in the Muse

by Kalika Yap

Some days ideas pour in. Other days the well feels dry. Steven Pressfield’s book The War of Art names the blocker as Resistance. His fix is simple. Show up like a pro. Start on time. Say a short prayer to the Muse. Then work.

Before he writes, Pressfield calls on help the way the ancients did. He speaks a line from Homer:

O Divine Poesy, daughter of Zeus, sustain for me this song.

That one line shifts you from pressure to partnership.

Long ago, the Greeks believed creativity was received, not owned. You do your part. Then the gift arrives.

  • Enthousiasmos comes from entheos, “in a god.” It is the spark you feel when ideas land.
  • Daimōn is a guiding spirit. The Romans later called this a genius.
  • Eudaimonia means “good spirit” and points to a life that flourishes through aligned work.
  • The Muses were the bringers of inspiration who breathe ideas into makers and founders.

Use this lens to lower the stakes. You do not have to force brilliance. You can build a simple rhythm that invites it.

A Pressfield inspired practice you can use today

  1. Set your space
Close your tabs. Silence your phone. Take one slow breath.
  2. Name your aim
Write one clear line. “Today I will move ____ for ____.”
  3. Eudaimonia check
    Ask two questions.
Is this aligned with my values
Will this help my customers and team flourish
Adjust your aim if the answer is no.
  4. Invite the Muse
Say out loud. “Enthousiasmos.” Then, “I welcome my daimōn.”
Speak the Homer line if you like. “O Divine Poesy, daughter of Zeus, sustain for me this song.”
  5. Work a 10 minute sprint
Start messy. Sketch the landing page, outline the deck, write the offer. Do not judge.
  6. Stack or stop
If you feel momentum, add another 10 minutes. If not, stop with gratitude and book your next session.
  7. Park the win
End with one sentence. “What moved today was ____.”

Why this helps founders

  • It reduces pressure by shifting from ego to service.
  • It builds a daily rhythm that compounds.
  • It ties your work to eudaimonia, not just output.
