03 Jan Eight Steps to Achieving Your Goals in 2023: A Guide for Women Entrepreneurs
As a woman entrepreneur, you know your unique challenges and obstacles in building and growing your business. That’s why it’s so important to set clear goals and have a plan in place to achieve them. Not only do clear goals help keep you focused and motivated, but research has shown that those who write down their goals are 42% more likely to achieve them. With the right mindset and strategies, you can get what you want in 2023 and take your business and life to the next level.
Here are eight steps to help you achieve your goals as a woman entrepreneur in the coming year:
1. Start by setting SMART goals for what you want to achieve in 2023. Make sure they’re realistic yet push you to stretch beyond your comfort zone. This will help you stay focused and motivated throughout the year. SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals that help individuals and organizations set and work towards clear objectives. The acronym stands for the following:
• Specific: The goal should be clear and well-defined so it is easy to understand and work towards.
• Measurable: The goal should have quantifiable benchmarks that allow progress to be tracked and measured.
• Achievable: The goal should be realistic and achievable, given the available resources and constraints.
• Relevant: The goal should align with your life’s overall vision as an entrepreneur.
• Time-bound: The goal should have a specific timeline for completion, which helps to create a sense of urgency and keeps progress on track.
By setting SMART goals, you can work towards clear objectives and measure their progress in a structured and effective way.
“A goal is not always meant to be reached; it often serves simply as something to aim at.” –Bruce Lee
2. Make a plan to achieve your goals. Are you ready to turn your goals into a reality? Great! One of the most effective ways to do this is by creating a plan and breaking your goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks. Not only will this help you stay on track and make progress towards your ultimate goal, but research shows that setting specific, achievable goals can increase your chances of success by up to 95%.
So, where to start? First, take some time to think about your ultimate goal and what it will take to achieve it. Then, break that goal down into smaller tasks and create a timeline for completing each one. This will help you stay focused and make it easier to track your progress.
My ultimate goal a few years ago was to learn meditation. Based on the science I read, I knew taking mindfulness would be a great keystone habit that would lead to other better habits.
Mindfulness has made a huge impact not only in my personal life but in my business too!
As you work through your plan, don’t be afraid to make adjustments as needed. It’s okay if your timeline changes or you need to modify your goals – the important thing is to stay committed and stay on track.
Need a little extra motivation? Studies have shown that people who write down their goals are more likely to achieve them than those who don’t. So grab a pen and paper (I use reMarkable 2) (or your favorite planning app like Notion) and start making your dream a reality! With a clear plan in place and a little bit of determination, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
Break your goals down into smaller, more manageable tasks and create a timeline for completing each one. This will help you stay on track and make progress towards your ultimate goal.
“An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing.” – Dale Carnegie.
3. Surround yourself with supportive people who will encourage and motivate you. Starting and growing a business can be a challenging and often isolating experience. That’s why it’s so important to surround yourself with supportive people who can provide encouragement and motivation along the way.
According to a National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) study, women-owned businesses are on the rise. In fact, as of 2022, there are an estimated 13 million women-owned businesses in the United States, employing nearly 9 million people and generating over $1.9 trillion in annual revenue.
But despite these impressive numbers, women entrepreneurs still face unique challenges, including gender-based discrimination, unequal pay, and a lack of access to capital. That’s where a strong support system comes in. By surrounding yourself with other women entrepreneurs, you can tap into a wealth of knowledge, resources, and support.
One great resource for connecting with other women entrepreneurs is the NAWBO, which offers networking opportunities, mentorship programs, and educational resources for women business owners. I’ve served on the board of NAWBO Los Angeles for many years and know firsthand the incredible community and support they provide.
Also consider joining an entrepreneur group like the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) , the Young Presidents Organization (YPO) or Vistage. I’ve been a part of EO for 13 years and it was one of the most pivotal decisions in my business and life.
Groups like EO or YPO bring together people facing similar challenges, creating a safe and supportive environment for sharing experiences and ideas. In addition to providing emotional and social support, support groups can also be a great source of practical advice and resources.
In addition to seeking out professional resources, it’s important also to have a personal support system of friends, family, and mentors who can offer encouragement and guidance. These people can help to keep you motivated and focused on your goals, and can be a valuable source of support during times of stress or uncertainty.
Having a strong support system, especially other women entrepreneurs, can make all the difference when it comes to achieving your goals.
Whether you’re seeking guidance from a mentor or considering hiring an entrepreneur coach to help keep you on track, there are plenty of options to choose from.
Mentors can be a fantastic resource, offering valuable insights based on their own experiences and expertise. Mentors, especially those who have experience as an entrepreneur or have the entrepreneur spirit, can help you clarify your goals, provide feedback on your progress, and offer suggestions for overcoming obstacles. Plus, they can serve as an inspiring role model, encouraging you to reach your full potential.
Finally, hiring an entrepreneur coach can be a fantastic way to get personalized support and achieve your goals. Whoever you hire, make sure your entrepreneur coaches are certified and trained professionals by the International Coaching Federation. Certified entrepreneur coaches who have decades of experience in both business and entrepreneur coaching can help you develop strategies for reaching your goals and hold you accountable for following through on them. With a structured approach to goal-setting and plenty of motivation and encouragement, a coach can be a powerful ally on your journey to success. So if you’re a woman entrepreneur, don’t be afraid to seek out the support and resources you need to succeed. By surrounding yourself with supportive people, you’ll be better equipped to overcome the challenges that come with starting and growing a business, and you’ll be more likely to achieve your goals.
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help or resources when you need them. As a woman entrepreneur, it can be challenging to ask for help. There are a number of reasons:
1. We don’t want to appear weak or incompetent: Many women entrepreneurs struggle with the fear of appearing weak or incompetent when they ask for help. This fear can be especially pronounced in male-dominated industries, where women may feel pressure to prove themselves and show that they are capable of handling everything on their own.
2. There’s a cultural stigma around seeking help: In some cultures, there is a stigma around seeking help, particularly for women. This can make it difficult for women entrepreneurs to feel comfortable asking for assistance, even when they need it.
3. We feel like we have to do it all: Many women entrepreneurs feel a sense of responsibility to do it themselves, whether handling all aspects of their business or managing their personal lives. This can make it hard for them to acknowledge when they need help and to reach out for assistance.
4. The lack of available resources: Depending on your industry and/or location, it may be difficult for women entrepreneurs to find resources and support specifically tailored to their needs. This can make it harder to ask for help, as we may need help figuring out where to turn.
Despite these challenges, it’s important for women entrepreneurs to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. By asking for assistance, we can access valuable resources and support that can help them overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Whether it’s seeking advice from a mentor, joining a support group, or hiring an entrepreneur coach, reaching out for support can help you overcome obstacles and achieve your goals more quickly.
“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.”
5. Stay positive and focus on your progress, no matter how small. It’s easy to get discouraged when you’re working towards a big goal, but it’s important to remember that every step you take brings you closer to your destination.
Research shows that having a positive attitude can increase your motivation and improve your chances of success. One study found that people who maintained a positive outlook were more likely to achieve their goals and reported higher levels of satisfaction with their progress.
One way to stay positive and focus on your progress is to celebrate your wins, no matter how small. This could be as simple as giving yourself a pat on the back for completing a task or treating yourself to something special when you reach a milestone. Recognizing your achievements, even the small ones, can help you stay motivated and keep moving forward.
“Stop managing your time. Start managing your focus.” – Robin Sharma
Another way to stay positive is to focus on your progress, rather than dwelling on any setbacks or challenges you may encounter. It’s natural to experience setbacks from time to time, but it’s important to stay focused on your long-term goal and remember that every step forward, no matter how small, is still progress.
If you’re struggling to stay positive, there are also plenty of resources available to help. As I mentioned above, seeking support from a mentor, joining a support group, or working with an entrepreneur coach to stay motivated and on track. So, always try to stay positive and focus on your progress to achieve your goals in a faster and efficient way.
In a gentle way, you can shake the world.” — Mahatma Gandhi
6. Celebrate your successes along the way. Celebrating your successes along the way is an important part of achieving your goals. Whether it’s a small victory or a major milestone, take the time to recognize and appreciate your hard work and progress.
It can be easy to get caught up in the day-to-day grind and forget to take a moment to appreciate the progress you’ve made. But taking the time to celebrate your victories, no matter how big or small, can have a number of benefits.
First, celebrating your successes can help to boost your morale and motivation. It’s natural to feel a sense of accomplishment when you reach a milestone or achieve a goal, and this can help to keep you motivated as you continue to work towards your larger objectives.
In addition, celebrating your successes can also help to improve your confidence and self-esteem. By recognizing and appreciating the progress you’ve made, you can begin to see yourself as capable and competent, which can help to give you the confidence to tackle even bigger challenges in the future.
According to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, individuals who regularly celebrate their achievements are more likely to experience positive emotions and higher levels of well-being. In fact, the study found that individuals who regularly celebrated their successes were more likely to experience increased happiness, positive mood, and a sense of accomplishment.
So, the next time you reach a milestone or achieve a goal, take a moment to celebrate your success. Whether it’s a small victory or a major accomplishment, the benefits of recognizing and appreciating your hard work and progress are well worth it.

8. Finally, don’t give up. It’s normal to face challenges and setbacks, but staying committed to your goals and working towards them is important.
It’s important to remember that achieving your goals is not always easy, and it’s normal to face challenges and setbacks along the way. It’s natural to feel frustrated or discouraged at times, but it’s important to stay committed and keep working towards your goals.
One way to stay committed is to remind yourself of the reasons why you set your goals in the first place. What do you hope to achieve? How will reaching your goals improve your life or the lives of others? Keep these reasons in mind as you work towards your goals and use them as motivation when you encounter setbacks.
“You cannot swim for new horizons until you have courage to lose sight of the shore.” — William Faulkner
It’s also helpful to focus on the progress you’re making, rather than dwelling on any setbacks or challenges. Every step forward, no matter how small, is still progress. Celebrate your achievements and use them as motivation to keep going.
Finally, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s seeking advice from a mentor, joining a support group, or hiring a coach, there are plenty of resources available to help you stay on track and achieve your goals.
