At 28 or 29, Emma Grede was so upset she hadn't "made it" by 30 that she made a big grand plan.
She's about to turn 44. She co-founded Good American. She's a founding partner of Skims. She wrote a new book, Start With Yourself.
And on stage at the Create & Cultivate Festival, she told us she's still making grand plans.
Making the plan is the easy half. Her whole talk was about the second half. Fulfilling it.
Know your numbers. Have the hard conversation early. Start before you feel ready.
My favorite line: "The water doesn't get warmer because you wait to jump in."
I've been building companies for 27 years, and I still needed to hear it.
This week's newsletter is called The Art of Making Grand Plans. It has the 5-step guide I built from her talk.
I also linked my EO Wonder Podcast interview with Jaclyn Johnson, the founder of Create & Cultivate. Link in bio.
Comment BRAVE and I'll send you the worksheet that goes with it.

A rainy day at The Met led me to the Costume Institute’s Costume Art exhibit. The show places fashion alongside art from the museum’s collection, inviting you to see the connections for yourself. From Van Gogh and Seurat to Balenciaga and ancient Greek vases, I loved seeing how artists and designers have looked at the human body through the years. The perfect place to spend a rainy afternoon in NYC! ❤️

The Asian American Business Association’s 50th Ann

The Asian American Business Association’s 50th Annual Impact Awards in Downtown LA was EVERYTHING. A beautiful black-tie evening honoring Asian American business owners, entrepreneurs, and leaders while marking 50 years of entrepreneurship, friendship, and community.
Extra special shoutout to Amanda Ma, one of the night’s honorees, who invited us to join her table. Amanda and I first met decades ago when we both received an award from ABA. And here we are, all these years later, still close friends and cheering each other on. Thank you, Amanda, for including me!
It was also so much fun reconnecting with dear friends from the Mayor’s AAPI Task Force @aapi_la and the Entrepreneurs Organization @entrepreneursorg @eolosangeles and seeing so many entrepreneurial and business friends I’ve known through the years.
Businesses change. Careers grow. Kids grow up. Years fly by. I’m so grateful for the friendships that have lasted through it all. 🥰

In 2008, the economy fell apart. I had a baby girl

In 2008, the economy fell apart. I had a baby girl at home, still nursing, and I'd just found out her little sister was on the way.
At the same time, I was fighting to defend my Luxe Link patent and flying back and forth to Honolulu to launch The Waxing Co, still nursing, with a baby on my hip.
It was just a lot, all at the same time.
Marcus Aurelius knew that feeling. A plague, a war, a rebellion, and a body that kept failing him, for almost the whole time he ruled Rome.
And the line written about him afterward was this: "amid unusual and extraordinary difficulties he both survived himself and preserved the empire."
Survived himself. Preserved the empire. In that order.
This week's newsletter has the 5-step process I use with my coaching clients when everything happens at once, so they come out the other side with themselves and their business intact.
Comment UNUSUAL and I'll send you the worksheet that goes with it.
