06 Jan Practice Makes Possibilities
by Kalika Yap
What are you practicing each day as an entrepreneur?
Not your goals. Not your to-do list.
Your practice.
Because what you practice becomes your patterns.
And your patterns become your future.
Some days, we practice calm.
Some days, we practice hustle.
Some days, without realizing it, we practice stress… impatience… self-criticism… overthinking.
And here’s the good news:
You can choose your practice.
When you practice energy, clarity, gratitude, and kindness, you don’t just feel better.
You build a business with more ease, stronger relationships, and bigger possibilities than you imagined.
So today, I want to invite you to reflect on what you’re practicing, and I want to share a simple routine that supports your mind, body, and spirit while you lead.
Practice Makes Possibilities
As entrepreneurs, we’re building something every day.
But we’re also becoming someone every day.
You are practicing leadership.
Even when you’re tired.
Even when you’re unsure.
Even when nobody sees the effort behind the scenes.
You are practicing:
- How you respond to pressure
- How you speak to yourself
- How you treat your team
- How you recover after setbacks
- How you choose meaning in the middle of chaos
And if you’re like most entrepreneurs, you’re holding a lot.
The vision. The responsibility. The growth. The unknown.
So let me ask you gently:
What would shift if you practiced the inner qualities you want your success to be built on?
Not perfection.
Not constant output.
But presence. Energy. Gratitude. Clarity. Self-trust.
Because possibilities come faster when your foundation is strong.
A Practice I Love: Metta (Loving Friendliness)
One of the practices I return to again and again is metta, loving friendliness. In metta practice, we intentionally send warm, loving energy to everyone we meet. I like to imagine it like a soft glow in my heart, quietly expanding.
Cultivating metta is one of my practices I learned through silent retreats and my daily sitting meditation.
And what’s amazing is how it has a compound effect.
Before you even realize it, you’re affecting your surroundings. Your energy ripples out. It moves through your office, your home, your friends, your community and tribe.
Because as leaders, our energy isn’t private.
It reverberates.
Your Daily Energy Routine (Mind, Body, Spirit)
A simple practice you can do in 10 to 15 minutes to reset your energy and expand your capacity.
Step 1: Mind (2–3 minutes)
Clear the mental noise.
- Close your eyes and take 5 slow breaths.
- Ask yourself: “What’s the most important thing today?”
- Write down:
- One priority
- One problem you’re releasing
- One belief you’re choosing (example: “I can handle this.”)
This trains your brain to lead, not react.
Step 2: Body (3–5 minutes)
Move your energy.
Choose one:
- Stretch your shoulders and hips
- 20 squats or a quick walk
- 60 seconds of shaking out tension
Then take a sip of water and breathe again.
This reminds your body that you are safe, capable, and present.
Step 3: Spirit (3 minutes)
Choose gratitude and kindness (and try metta).
First, take one slow breath and gently place a hand on your heart.
Then try this 1-minute metta practice:
Metta Script (1 minute):
- Silently say: “May I be peaceful. May I be healthy. May I be guided. May I be free.”
- Then bring to mind someone you’ll see today (a staff member, a client, a loved one) and say:
“May you be peaceful. May you be healthy. May you be guided. May you be free.” - Then expand outward:
“May everyone I meet today feel safe, supported, and respected.”
Now finish with:
- One specific gratitude for someone on your team
- One way you can be kind to yourself today
Examples:
- “I will take a real lunch break.”
- “I will not speak harshly to myself.”
- “I will pause before responding.”
This creates emotional safety, which increases creativity and better decisions.
Step 4: Leadership Practice (2 minutes)
Practice how you want to show up.
Ask:
- “What kind of leader do I want to be today?”
- “What does that leader do when things feel heavy?”
Choose one behavior to practice:
- Speak with clarity
- Delegate without guilt
- Stay calm under pressure
- Celebrate small wins
- Give feedback with care
What you practice becomes your identity.
Gratitude for Your Staff (A Powerful Entrepreneur Practice)
Your team is not just helping you run a business.
They’re helping you carry the dream.
A simple practice that changes everything:
Each day, send one message of appreciation.
It can be one sentence.
Examples:
- “Thank you for how you handled that client. It mattered.”
- “I noticed your attention to detail today. I appreciate you.”
- “You brought great energy into the room today. Thank you.”
When people feel seen, they give more.
And when your business feels human, people want to stay.
The Practice That Changes Everything: Kindness to Yourself
You are the engine of your business.
And when you practice self-criticism every day, you train your nervous system to live in pressure.
But when you practice self-respect, you create space for better decisions, better leadership, and better health.
Try this phrase today:
“I can be ambitious and kind to myself.”
That is strength.
A Gentle Reminder
The life you want is not built in one big leap.
It’s built through what you practice each day.
So be aware.
Because what you practice leads to immense possibilities.
And as you move through your day, may you remember this: your presence matters. Your energy affects people. Your leadership can be both strong and kind.
