The Four Agreements: A Simple Guide for Entrepreneurs Who Want More Ease and Impact

by Kalika Yap

When I found out my daughter’s new volleyball coach was having the team read The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, I lit up. It’s one of my favorite books—something I turn to again and again in both business and life.

The very next morning, I opened my gratitude journal, and this was the quote of the day:

Be impeccable with your word. Don’t take anything personally. Don’t make assumptions. Always do your best.
— Don Miguel Ruiz

That moment felt like a clear sign to share this with you.

These four simple ideas have supported me through so many seasons of entrepreneurship. They’ve helped me lead with more clarity, communicate more openly, and let go of things that aren’t mine to carry. If you’re looking for more ease in your leadership, I hope they help you too.

The Four Agreements — Entrepreneur Edition

  1. Be Impeccable with Your Word

Your words carry weight. They shape your culture, your client relationships, and your team’s trust. Whether you’re giving feedback, pitching, writing copy, or even talking to yourself—speak with clarity and care. Words build worlds.

  1. Don’t Take Anything Personally

In business, you’ll get feedback, ghosted emails, and clients who walk away. That doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. Most people are acting from their own stress or story. The less you personalize things, the more energy you get back to focus on what matters.

  1. Don’t Make Assumptions

Guesswork can lead to confusion, tension, or missed opportunities. Ask. Clarify. Listen. A two-minute check-in can save days of back-and-forth or unnecessary frustration.

  1. Always Do Your Best

Your best will look different every day. Some days you’ll feel sharp and focused. Other days, you’ll just be getting through. That’s okay. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up with what you’ve got and giving what you can.

How to Bring The Four Agreements Into Your Business

  1. Start Your Day with Intention

Read through the agreements each morning. Choose one to guide your day.

  1. Pause Before You Speak

Before you send that email or lead a call, take a breath. Ask: Am I being clear and kind?

  1. Check Your Reactions

When something stings, pause. Ask yourself: Is this really about me?

  1. Ask, Don’t Assume

When in doubt, reach out. A quick question can prevent days of miscommunication.

  1. Reflect Each Evening

Jot down what felt aligned today—and what you’d do differently tomorrow.

  1. Share With Your Team

Introduce these ideas at your next meeting. It’s a great conversation starter, and helps everyone lead with more awareness.
