The Power of the Eightfold Fence: A Lesson from Shōgun

I have been obsessed with Shōgun. One scene really resonated with me.

It’s when Mariko introduces the concept of the “eightfold fence,” a mental and emotional boundary-setting tool.

It’s inspired by an ancient poem where Susanoo-no-Mikoto, a deity, built eight layers of fences to protect his wife from threats. Mariko explains to Anjin (John Blackthorne) how the eightfold fence allows you to mentally retreat and safeguard your inner world, helping you stay composed in challenging situations.

She shares,

You must train yourself to listen without hearing. For instance, you can listen to the sound of a blossom falling, or rocks growing.

This practice involves creating mental space to step back from overwhelming situations while still meeting your responsibilities. It’s about maintaining control and protecting your peace, even when the world outside is chaotic.

For entrepreneurs, this concept can be a powerful tool for managing stress, making tough decisions, and staying focused. The eightfold fence offers a way to guard your mental energy while navigating the demands of running a business.

Applying the Eightfold Fence to Business

The eightfold fence isn’t about ignoring your emotions or denying reality. It’s about creating mental clarity in difficult moments. Mariko’s advice to Anjin, “If you really listen, the present circumstance vanishes,” speaks to finding calm in the midst of adversity. Here’s how you can apply this principle in your business:

  1. Separate Personal and Business Emotions
Business decisions often involve tough choices that can stir up emotions. The eightfold fence helps you compartmentalize, allowing you to handle professional responsibilities without letting personal feelings interfere.
  2. Maintain Focus Amidst Distractions
Like Susanoo’s fence shielded against threats from all sides, you can create mental barriers to keep distractions at bay. When stress builds, retreat to your mental “fence” to regain clarity.
  3. Protect Your Core Values
Mariko used the eightfold fence to stay true to her beliefs, even under pressure. As an entrepreneur, this principle helps you stay aligned with your values, no matter what challenges arise.
  4. Compartmentalize Problems
Breaking down complex issues into smaller, manageable parts allows you to tackle each one individually without feeling overwhelmed.
  5. Listen Without Reacting
Mariko’s teaching to “listen without hearing” emphasizes the value of observing without letting emotions cloud your judgment. This mindset helps you make objective decisions, especially in high-pressure situations.
  6. Balance Complexity with Simplicity
Even with countless responsibilities, practicing mindfulness—like focusing on the sound of leaves rustling—can help restore balance and calm your mind.

Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Eightfold Fence

  1. Create Mental Boundaries
Visualize different aspects of your business and life as separate compartments. When one area feels overwhelming, mentally step into another to find clarity.
  2. Practice Compartmentalization
List three current challenges in your business. Assign each its own “fence,” prioritizing which requires immediate action and which can wait.
  3. Listen Without Reacting
Take 10 minutes daily to sit quietly and listen to your surroundings without engaging. This practice trains your mind to stay calm and centered during stressful times.
  4. Define and Protect Your Core Values
Identify your top three business values and keep them front and center when making decisions.
  5. Balance Simplicity and Responsibility
Pick one small thing you can enjoy today, like a moment of quiet reflection or a brief walk. These simple pleasures can help ground you amid demanding workdays.
  6. Reflect Regularly
Set aside time each week to assess how well you’re maintaining your eightfold fence. Are you managing stress effectively? Are your values guiding your decisions?
