The Shoshin Shift: 8 Ways to Success

I recently returned from a 2 1/2 day entrepreneur retreat – an annual forum retreat that I’ve been attending for over 16 years with the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO).

Truth be told, I wasn’t excited to relearn some of the skills because I already had formal training.

As part of our re-training, I learned a new Japanese concept: Shoshin which I’d love to share with you today!

In business, we often think of ourselves to be on the top of our game – you know, the ultimate thought leaders in our respective fields.

However, there’s a powerful concept from Zen Buddhism that can help us be more successful and open to new possibilities: Shoshin, or the “beginner’s mind.”

What is Shoshin?

Shoshin means “beginner’s mind.” It encourages us to approach life with the openness and eagerness of a beginner, no matter how much experience we have.

This mindset helps us let go of assumptions and embrace curiosity and a willingness to learn.

How Shoshin Can Help You

In business maintaining a beginner’s mindset is a key which consistently opens the door to success.

  1. Sparks Creativity: By letting go of fixed ideas, we open ourselves up to new possibilities and incredible insights.
``Look with all your eyes, look.`` – Jules Verne
  1. Enhances Problem-Solving: A beginner’s mindset allows us to see problems from different angles, leading to amazing solutions.
  2. Promotes Lifelong Learning: In Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) one of our core values is “Thirst for Learning”.
When you have a Shoshin mindset it means we’re always ready to learn, keeping you adaptable and resilient in a constantly changing market.
  3. Builds Better Relationships: When you approach all of your interactions with curiosity and openness it strengthens connections with everyone: clients, partners, your team – the Starbucks barrista, your family. You get the picture.

8 Ways to Spark Success with Shoshin

  1. Acknowledge Your Wisdom, Your Smarts, Then Set It Aside
    • Recognize your knowledge and experience.
    • Consciously set aside preconceptions before approaching a task or problem.
  2. Ask Open-Ended Questions
    • Replace statements with questions.
    • Examples: “What if we tried this other way?” or “How might we solve this differently?”
  3. Embrace Curiosity
    • Approach each day with a learner’s mindset.
    • Seek out new experiences and perspectives. I recently took pottery class for the first time at Throw Clay! It’s invigorating learning new things!
``A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.`` – Oliver Wendell Holmes
  1. Practice Active Listening
    • Listen to understand, not to respond.
    • Value the input of others, regardless of their level of experience.
  2. Reflect and Adapt
    • Regularly reflect on your experiences and what you’ve learned.
    • Be willing to adapt your approach based on new insights.
  3. Encourage Team Creativity
    • Create an environment where team members feel safe to share new ideas.
    • Emphasize the importance of a beginner’s mindset within your team.
  4. Welcome Failure as a Learning Opportunity
    • View failures as opportunities to learn and grow.
    • Analyze what went wrong and how you can improve next time.
  5. Stay Humble
    • Remember that there is always more to learn.
    • Approach every situation with humility and a willingness to grow.
``To know what you know and what you do not know, that is true knowledge.`` – Confucius

Embracing Shoshin can profoundly impact your entrepreneurial journey.

By cultivating a beginner’s mind, you open yourself to endless possibilities, sparking creativity, innovation, and continuous growth.
