17 Dec The Sound of Silence
I had two goals in 2021:
- Be a better listener
- Go on a silent retreat.
I did research on silent retreats earlier in the year and in a blink, December arrived and I thought it wasn’t going to happen.
Then a series of serendipitous moments, which started with a casual invitation from a friend to put myself on a waitlist at Spirit Rock Meditation Center for a six-day silent retreat
An email from Spirit Rock said a spot opened and then quickly retracted (it was sent by mistake).
And then finally, 48 hours before the retreat started, a spot REALLY opened. Someone was exposed to COVID. The final spot.
It’s hard to describe the overall feel in words what it was like to be in noble silence for six days, so I’ll describe it in a couple of songs:
Love, love, love
This joy that I have
The world didn’t give it to me
Doesn’t make much to make me happy
Noble Silence = Golden Insights
Here are three insights — each as delightful as finding the hidden buddhas during my walks in nature.
- Not personal, not perfect, not permanent.
- Love to love.
- Your life is a hologram. How you are being in the small moments, is magnified as a bigger pattern in your entire life.
What do YOU see in your life that’s showing up bigger in life?
Do share! I’d love to hear from you!
We may tell ourselves that once our lives get on track – with a good career, a loving partner, and a better sense of security – then we’ll be able to focus on our greater purpose here. Deep down, many of us have felt this way. But is this really true?
