You Look Like Your Decisions

by Kalika Yap

There’s a saying that I love:

When you’re born, you look like your parents.
When you die, you look like your decisions.

Every choice leaves a trace.
One choice becomes the next, like dominoes.

That’s good news.
It means you’re not stuck.

From now on…you can choose your way forward, one clear decision at a time.

A few truths to hold:

1. Decisions compound
Small choices, repeated over time, build a life. Five minutes of focus. One honest call. One boundary. It all stacks.

2. Not everyone who is with you is for you
Never mistake proximity for loyalty. Some people clap for you in public and chip away in private. Keep your circle small and true.

3. The hardest part often comes right before you level up
When you’re close to a breakthrough, resistance spikes. That’s normal. Keep going.

4. Belief plus action is power
If you believe you’re part of a creative universe, remember what that implies. You’re not weak. Don’t wait for a sign. Act as if the response is already in motion.

Here’s a guide to help you make stronger decisions when rejection is loud and fear wants the mic.

A Step-by-Step Decision Guide for Founders

Step 1: Name the real decision
Write one clear question. Example: “Do I keep selling this offer, refine it, or end it this quarter?”

Step 2: Define success in one sentence
Finish this sentence: “This decision is a win if…” Keep it specific and measurable.

Step 3: List your three best options
No more than three. More choices create fog.

Step 4: Run the 10–10–10 check
How will I feel about each option in 10 days, 10 months, and 10 years? Circle the option that ages best.

Step 5: Do the one red flag test
For each option, ask: “What’s the single biggest risk?”
Can I reduce that risk with a small test, contract term, refund policy, or time box? Write the move.

Step 6: Check your circle
Write two names who tell you the truth. Ask only them for input. Skip the crowd.

Step 7: Decide in writing
“I choose option B because…” Put a date on it. Decision without a date is a wish.

Step 8: Schedule the first move in the next 24 hours
Make it tiny and real. Send the email. Build the landing page. Book the meeting.

Step 9: Track one lead measure
Pick one number you control and update it weekly—calls made, demos booked, pages written.

Step 10: Review in two weeks
What worked? What will you double down on? What will you stop? Keep it to three bullets.

The Power of One Decision

Eagles don’t fly with pigeons. Choose your altitude with your decisions and your company.

If you’re in a season where things feel uncertain, remember this: the universe meets you at action. When you move with intention, opportunities start to align.

If you’d like guidance on clarifying your next step, I’d love to help you see your path clearly and move forward with confidence.
